No, I suppose it wasn't. It would be a long drop if the yarn was knocked off.

What's the next project you have in mind? Something for someone special?

No, just for me.

[ He really doesn't think he's that talented, so making something special for Daisy wasn't at the forefront of his mind. ]

I was going to make book ends to hold my books, but I'm not sure on a design. It'd be nice if they weren't just two blocks of wood.

[She nods, letting that line of questioning drop though it's not forgotten.]

Well, what do you like? You have a favorite pet?

Not really. I've never had a pet before.

[ A pause. ]

My clan is named for the birds of the mountains, so I like birds.

Birds are good. I think birds would make excellent book ends.

[She does smile a little more wryly then.]

But be careful. If you fuck up a hawk, it'll look like a parrot.

Well now I have something to worry about.

[ Still, he laughs as he says it. ]

I will do my best to visualize it properly.

And no one really needs to see it either. It could look like any bird.

But maybe I could try looking at drawings first.

No, I meant looking at drawings in general to get an idea of where to start. With woodcarving you have to just sort of pick away at the wood until you can see what it could be.

If that makes any sense. So once I start whittling it down, it would be good to have an idea as to the shape in my head.

I see how that would be different. At least in theory—I've never really had a lot of experience with either.

Nor I with drawing. Paper is precious at home and so we show creativity in other ways. Like woodcarving. Or embroidery, jewelry; things like that.

I suppose people are like that everywhere.

[Whatever material they have, they're always creative. And they always give each other little gifts.]
